5 Life Lessons for my Teenage Self

1. You don't always have to be picked

Being picked for teams, receiving arbitrary grades from teachers, I only know too well that it will sometimes feel to you that you are at the mercy of the world around you. It will seem like life hands you your lot in life and you just have to suck it up and deal with it. However, you will come to learn that this isn't exactly the reality you are living in. There are two options available to you at any given moment, you can choose to suck it up or you can choose to suck it out. Picking yourself is hidden behind sucking it out and this is where your adventure will begin. You don't need to be paid for expressing your creative side, you can get the job to pay the bills and still live the way you choose to live.

2. Quiet Confidence is a Real Thing

Not all boisterous people are self confident, they are quite often wearing a different coloured mask to your own. Don't be fooled by the trappings of success, true success can be found at a feeling level. Spend time around those that you sense are comfortable in their own skin, or at least have good intentions for you and the wider world, and you won't go too far wrong. Confidence isn't found in the words, it is found in the person behind the words. it is also useful to know that a self confident individual also feels fear, it is just that they are no longer willing to live their life paralysed by it's presence.

3. You won't be everyone's cup of tea but you can still be a damn good cup

You won't always want everyone to like you and when this process begins you will begin to feel a new sense of freedom. People are not always rational, just reflect on your own actions and behaviours if you doubt this, with this in mind there is no 'correct' answer. Your best decisions are going to come from listening to the feeling and the only goal that will not crumble before your very is eyes is the sense of direction that will ultimately guide you on your journey.

4. Life isn't black and white

Those people over there are not 'bad' and you are not 'good'. When you begin to realise this your judgemental monkey brain will begin to become a little quieter and you will feel a sense of calm and surrender that the monkey in you cannot quantify. Life is full of colour, it is there to be lived, there is no such thing as a mistake, there are lessons you can choose to learn from that will help you evolve into the person you want to be.

5. There is nowhere to get to

As you potter around like a rat in an endless rat race it will finally dawn on you that you have no idea where the race ends. You will begin to realise that everyone is facing the unknown and making their best educated guess at what will unfold. You will start to realise that all you can ever do is take the next step, it sounds almost too simple but as you put your best foot forward each day you will be met with plans that you would have never been capable of thinking up yourself. You will begin to realise that there is nowhere to get to, you will often forget this as you continue with the race, but ultimately this realisation will stay in your awareness, this is one of those times that you will be glad to know that you cannot unsee something once you have seen it. Ultimately there is no greener field and nowhere to get to. Over there doesn't exit when you are sitting here writing, all there ever is at any moment in time is your immediate surroundings.
