The Law of 33%

I first came across the concept of the law of 33% in a Ted Talk by Tai Lopez back in 2015. When I heard it I was struck by the simplicity and effectiveness of this law. During the talk Tai mentions numerous key historical figures who all had mentors including Alexander the Great and Albert Einstein. Prior to 2015 I think I never really took the time to wonder how these great minds acquired their knowledge. I think I just assumed that they were special and they had differently wired minds from the rest of humanity at birth. In 2015 I became aware of this concept but this didn't mean that I understood it. I can remember thinking how can I even find mentors? this seems like an impossible task, so clearly this rule was not really made for me.

How to Identify your top 33%

Like most things in life, concepts and laws can only really be understood by taking consistent action and accepting the natural fear of rejection that we all feel at some point in time. It is funny because it is only in hindsight that I discovered that I found mentors in the last year or so. My most important mentors I overlooked for a long time because I somehow made up a rule in my head that if I paid a mentor it mean't it wasn't really a true mentor. A true mentor would be like finding a Mister Miyagi who saw something in me.

So what tips do I have on finding a mentor? On reflection I would turn to a feeling rather than what I personally think of the person. I have yet to find the perfect human specimen but I have found many experts in certain fields. So the first thing I would ask myself is does this person know more than I currently do in this domain? When it comes to becoming aware of a feeling I would ask myself do I feel good around this person? and does it feel like he/she is trying to help me in spite of us sometimes having different ways of thinking?

How to identify the middle 33%

This is a little bit more straight forward but it is also a vital segment. The questions I would ask myself are does this person have a desire to be themselves and do something new? Is this person open to learning from each other and having fun in the process? Lastly and probably the most important question of all, do I fundamentally like this person enough to spend time with them and do I get the feeling this is reciprocated?

How to identify the bottom 33%

To be honest I don't put a lot of thought into this. Usually these people will come into your life because you will be part of their top 33%. However, almost paradoxically, this segment helps me to identify what my top 33% would look for in me. This segment also helps me to identify the things that I am learning that are of use to other people and I find great satisfaction in helping others to accomplish what they truly want out of life.

If I am going to hang out with someone or teach someone then I would look for humility, ambition and an intention to create a better world for themselves and for others. If I feel that someone meets these criteria then I am willing to help them in whatever way I can. When it comes to teaching, my rule is to aim to keep it as simple and as relevant to them as possible. Any topic, no matter how complex started with a simple premise therefore it can be deconstructed and re-simplified. The two variables that I see that determine how easily it is to simplify a topic are the understanding the teacher has of the topic along with their desire for the student to understand what they are teaching.

That is my current understanding of the Law of 33% and how it comes full circle to create a better life for all of those involved.
